From July 8th to 10th, 2024, I attended the SICSA PhD Conference at the King’s Conference Centre, University of Aberdeen.
The event focused on “Developing Adaptability and Resilience,” a crucial theme for emerging researchers navigating the ever-evolving landscape of academia and industry.
As part of the organising team, I had the opportunity to help mainly at the registration desk and set up for the various workshops and the reverse viva sessions. These tasks provided a unique perspective on the behind-the-scenes efforts required to facilitate a seamless conference experience.
Additionally, I contributed my poster: “Immersive Eco-Fashion Experience: A Virtual Reality Framework with Conversational Agent for Sustainable Fashion Engagement,” showcasing my PhD
research.
Highlights of the Symposium
Day 1: Career Fair
The highlight of the first day was undoubtedly the careers fair, featuring prominent companies, including Amazon. Their presence offered invaluable insights into potential job opportunities and the skills sought after in the tech industry. This session was particularly enlightening, underscoring adaptability’s importance in career planning.
Day 2: Parallel Workshops
On the second day, I attended the “Navigating Career Pathways” workshop, which provided detailed information about post-study work visas and immigration rules.
This session clarified the procedural aspects of transitioning from academic to professional life in the UK. The practical advice and resources shared were instrumental in helping me plan my career trajectory.
Day 3: Social Activities
The conference’s final day featured engaging social activities, including a memorable coffee-tasting session with Long Walk Coffee. This activity, hosted by a local cafe, allowed us to explore various coffee flavours and learn about the intricacies of coffee brewing. It was a delightful experience that fostered networking and relaxation after intensive workshop sessions.
Personal Reflections:
Participating in the SICSA PhD Conference 2024 was an enriching experience that significantly contributed to my academic and professional development. Engaging with industry leaders at the careers fair broadened my understanding of the job market’s demands and opportunities. The workshops provided practical knowledge on navigating immigration rules, which is crucial for international students like myself.
Moreover, the opportunity to present my research poster allowed me to receive constructive feedback from peers and experts in the field. This feedback is invaluable as I continue to refine my project, “Immersive Eco-Fashion Experience: A Virtual Reality Framework with Conversational Agent for Sustainable Fashion Engagement.” The insights gained have enhanced my approach to integrating virtual reality and sustainable fashion, ensuring my work remains relevant and impactful.
Overall, the conference helped me develop essential skills in resilience and adaptability and provided a platform for meaningful connections and learning. It reaffirmed the importance of community and collaboration in academia, and I am grateful for the experience.
