Santo Remedio Restaurant, London (Hybrid Event)
Red Global MX UK recently hosted a focused, hybrid follow-up meeting with the Diputado Migrante for Mexico City, Raúl Torres, in London. The gathering brought together members of the Mexican diaspora and the Diputado to review legislative updates and exchange perspectives on key areas affecting Mexicans residing abroad.
The meeting was framed as an opportunity to understand and influence the ongoing political dialogue regarding the role of the Mexican diaspora.
Legislative Review and Policy Context
Diputado Torres presented an overview of recent legislative actions and developments relevant to the community:
- Validity of the Voter ID: Discussion covered the technical and legal implementation of giving full validity to the consular voter ID (Credencial de Elector) for use in banking and transactions within Mexico.
- Access to Justice: The implementation of virtual court hearings in civil and family matters was reviewed as a means to reduce travel burdens for Mexicans living abroad.
- Institutional Representation: The Deputy detailed the recent modification establishing a dedicated seat for the diaspora on Mexico’s Economic, Social, and Environmental Council, encouraging members to consider the implications of this new mechanism for influence.
Exchange of Expertise and Challenges
The latter part of the meeting shifted to areas where the UK diaspora’s professional expertise can inform policy in Mexico. Red Global MX UK members engaged in a dialogue concerning:
- Urban Development: A discussion was held regarding the challenges of gentrification in Mexican cities and the potential for leveraging international expertise within the network to analyse comparative urban models.
- Technology and Society: Members shared perspectives on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for humanitarian and social projects, specifically in the context of aiding the search for missing persons.
- Professional Mobility: The need to address the homologation of professional titles and licenses within the framework of trade negotiations (including the UK-Mexico treaty) was highlighted as a critical area requiring technical input from the network.
Next Steps for Collaboration
The conversation concluded with commitments focused on formalising channels for continued technical exchange and dialogue:
- Technical Input: The Red Global MX UK network will compile technical expertise to contribute to perspectives concerning professional mobility.
- Information Sharing: The network will facilitate the sharing of information regarding international funding and opportunities relevant to causes in Mexico.
